WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has called for urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent further atrocities in Sudan. In a statement issued today, Senator Cardin highlighted the dire situation in El Fasher and the looming threat from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Senator Cardin expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in the region. “The residents of El Fasher are already suffering from devastating bombings and shelling by the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), and now face an imminent threat from the RSF, which is preparing for a new offensive,” he said. He emphasized that those in the famine-stricken Zam Zam camp are particularly at risk if the RSF proceeds with its planned assault.

The Senator urged the international community to take decisive action. “I call on all diplomatic actors — bilateral, regional, and multilateral — to demand an immediate halt to the actions of the RSF, SAF, and their allies. We must use every diplomatic tool at our disposal to prevent this attack, including renewing and expanding the UN arms embargo on Darfur to cover all of Sudan. Furthermore, it is crucial to ensure humanitarian aid access and hold those responsible for these atrocities accountable,” Cardin stated. He reaffirmed his support for the people of Sudan in their quest for peace and justice.
