Getachew Reda Boycotts TPLF Congress, Warns of Party Crisis Amid Military Concerns

Addis Ababa – In a surprising development, the Ethiopian Election Board announced today that it has decided to legally register the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) under “special conditions.” The board’s decision comes after confirmation from the Ministry of Justice that the TPLF has ceased its violent activities and is now committed to adhering to constitutional law. According to the amended political parties’ registration and election proclamation, the TPLF must hold a general meeting within six months to approve its bylaws and elect its leaders.

This decision adds a new layer of complexity to the unfolding crisis within the TPLF. Earlier, Tigray’s Interim President and TPLF Vice Chairperson, Getachew Reda, announced his boycott of the upcoming party congress, expressing deep concerns over its legitimacy and democratic integrity.

In a letter to TPLF Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael and the Central Inspection Commission, Getachew argued that participating in the congress would endanger both the party and the people of Tigray. He noted that other senior leaders share his concerns, with several refusing to attend the congress, which they deem an “illegal movement” that doesn’t represent the TPLF.

Getachew’s boycott follows his recent scathing interview with Dimtsi Weyane, where he accused the TPLF leadership of corruption, mismanagement, and compromising regional security.

Meanwhile, senior military leaders in the region have issued a joint statement warning against the deepening political rift that threatens Tigray’s peace and unity. They emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution of political disputes and opposed any actions that could destabilize the region.

The military leaders expressed their support for the progress made under the Pretoria agreement, which has transitioned the region from conflict to peace. They also pledged to collaborate with the federal government to strengthen the rule of law, combat corruption, and maintain regional stability.

This latest development, with the TPLF’s legal registration under special conditions, further highlights the ongoing tensions and the uncertain future of the party. The pressure is now on for the TPLF to navigate these internal and external challenges as it prepares for its mandated general meeting and leadership election.
