AU to Launch New Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia

The African Union (AU) has announced the launch of a new mission in Somalia, set to commence in January 2025. This mission, named the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), will replace the current African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

The decision follows the adoption of the Strategic Concept of Operations, which outlines the framework and objectives for AUSSOM. This new mission aims to build on the progress made by its predecessors, ATMIS and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which was succeeded by ATMIS in 2022.

AU Adopts New Mission Plan for Somalia Post-ATMIS

AUSSOM’s primary objectives include supporting the Somali government in stabilizing the country, enhancing security, and fostering conditions for sustainable development. The mission will focus on critical areas such as counter-terrorism, capacity building of Somali security forces, and promoting political dialogue and reconciliation.

Egypt and Djibouti have already offered to contribute to the elements of AUSSOM, signaling strong regional support for the mission. Their contributions are expected to bolster the mission’s capabilities and ensure a more robust and coordinated effort in achieving its goals.

The transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM marks a significant step in the AU’s ongoing commitment to peace and stability in Somalia. With the backing of member states and international partners, AUSSOM aims to create a secure environment conducive to the long-term stabilization and development of Somalia.

Further details on the structure and specific initiatives of AUSSOM will be released in the coming months as the AU finalizes preparations for the mission’s launch.
