161 Civilians Killed in Amhara and Oromia – Ethiopian Rights Body

On May 28, 2024, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission released a report documenting severe human rights violation in the Amhara and Oromia regions. The report highlighted numerous instances of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, civilian deaths, destruction of property, and unlawful detentions.  

The Commission implicated Ethiopian government forces in extrajudicial killings, civilian deaths, and enforced disappearances. It also accused “unidentified militias” and OLA – Shene of causing civilian deaths and property destruction. 

A total of 21 civilians were executed by government security forces in the Amhara region across three separate incidents, including 11 young boys from an exemplary school in the North Gojjam Zone. 

The report also stated that drone attacks claimed the lives of 10 civilians in the North Shewa and Horo Gudru Zones of the Amhara and Oromia regions, respectively. In the Amhara region, a drone strike targeted a school compound, resulting in two civilian deaths and nine injuries. 

 Similarly, the report covered numerous cases of enforced disappearances, kidnappings, and mass detentions.
